arasoは、久留米絣の洋服のデザイン、普及活動を行う古賀円とアートコーディネーターの月田尚子が「久留米絣とアートのかけあわせで生まれる可能性を見てみたい」という想いからはじめた小さなプロジェクトです。久留米絣がもつ素朴な魅力とアーティストの創造的な感性から生まれた商品や作品を、発信・販売していきます。
久留米絣は、その昔、筑後川に育まれた肥沃な大地をもつ福岡県南の筑後地方で、綿や藍の栽培が盛んに行なわれていたことから発展しました。先染め織物のひとつで、最初に糸束を括って染色し、染めた糸束を一本の糸にほどき織ることで様々な模様の反物が出来上がります。完成までの工程は30以上、かかる時間は約3か月。時間と手間をかけてつくりあげた久留米絣は「市井（しせい）の芸術」と呼ばれ、そこで暮らす人々の美意識や豊かな風土から生まれた伝統工芸品です。
プロジェクト名のarasoは、久留米絣の工程に欠くことのできない「括り」で使用する糸の一種である「粗苧」から名付けています。粗苧は、絣糸の模様部分が染まらないように縛る防染のための麻の皮のこと。粗苧で括った絣糸を染めると、その部分だけ染まらず白く残ります。その糸と別の絣糸と織り合わせることで、さまざまな柄を生み出していきます。
絣とアートという２つのジャンルを束ねたりほどいたり、かけあわせて新たなものを生み出したりする粗苧のような役割になれれば、という想いから名付けました。
araso is a small project started by Madoka Koga, who designs and introduce Kurume Kasuri, and Shoko Tsukita, an art coordinator, with the idea to “What possibilities are created by combining Kurume Kasuri and Art". The project will introduce products and artworks that are created from the rustic charm of Kurume Kasuri and the creative sensibilities of artists.
The project name comes from "ARASO," one of the threads used in the "tying" process, which is essential to the Kurume Kasuri process. ARASO is a hemp skin that is used to tie the patterned parts of the Kasuri threads to prevent them from dying. After Kasuri threads tied with ARASO are dyed, those parts remain undyed and remain white. By weaving these threads with other Kasuri threads, a variety of patterns can be created.
We chose the project name because we hope to play a role like ARASO, binding and untying the two genres of Kasuri and art and combining them to create a new future.
